St. Simon’s Island

Hey everybody! My family and I just finished up a few days of R&R at St. Simon’s Island. It is really a beautiful place to visit. We spent our time walking down the beach, playing in the ocean, cruising the island on a golf cart, and enjoying God’s beautiful creation. We are on our way back now. Desirae, Selina & I were talking and one of my favorite sayings came to mind. “Unapplied Truth Is Like Unapplied Paint It Doesn’t Do Anyone Any Good!!! The Value Of Paint Is In The Application!!” We are taught so many truths from the Bible that we seriously need to apply to our lives each day. One of these truths that seems to ring so clearly in my mind today is the fact that we need to truly trust God in every situation. That is so easy to say…but is so difficult to do when you find yourself in a challenging situation. But TRUTH doesn’t change because of the situations that we may find ourselves in. God declares in the scriptures that His hearts desire is for us to continually lean on Him for our strength, help and hope. If we continually lean on Him we will never be disappointed. So I guess what I am trying to say is to make sure that you keep your ladder leaning on God’s wall and He will never let you fall.

We are the body of Christ.

Just recently I was reading a passage of scripture out of the Bible in 1 Corinthians 12. These verses really spoke to my heart. Sometimes working with people in a church setting can be kind of challenging. It seems like everyone has their own opinion or a better way of doing something. Sometimes this can make even a simple task very complicated. But there is no doubt in Paul’s mind when he wrote this passage in Corinthians that the body of Christ is made up with all different types of people just like our natural body is made up of many parts. We are not all eyes, we are not all ears, we are not all feet or hands, and yet God’s plan is for his body to work together in love and unity. Just because someone has different talents or abilities, or even different responsibilities on the team it doesn’t mean that they are any more or less important than all the other parts of the team. For a natural body to be healthy, all the parts of the body need to work together and stay connected. I know it is true that no body part can continue to have life unless it stays connected to the body as a whole. With this information we are given a challenge in 1^st Corinthians, that even though it may be a difficult task we are all to work together, stay connected, and do our part. The body of Christ suffers if we choose not to do this.

Is God Looking for Excellence?

I have had the privilege of serving as a career long Children’s Pastor. Several thoughts about ministry come to my mind. I think about the limited commitment that a lot of people take when it comes to children’s ministry. Over the years I have observed many people that have seemed to catch a vision for children’s ministry. They start purchasing supplies, researching curriculum, gathering a team to work with…and just as quickly as they seemed to catch a vision they lose their excitement or zeal and move on to a different area of ministry. Puppets are left in boxes, costumes left in a drawer, backdrops abandoned, etc.

I will never forget an experience that I had years ago in a revival service. I went to the altar and spent an extended time in prayer. The Lord spoke to my heart and said that there are a lot of people who are willing to minister to adults, but there are few that are willing to minister to children, especially in a long term situation. From that night on, I purposed in my heart to do my very best to develop an effective children’s ministry. God has given us many opportunities to minister for him, more than I could have ever imagined. Opportunities to minister at camps, conferences, outreaches and large evangelistic events. There are many ways to reach out to children and their families if you have a heart for it!

Selina and I are driving back from Panama City today. We were blessed with the opportunity of attending a few days of Bigstuf Beach Camp. We observed a ministry determined to reach out to teenagers with a commitment to excellence. The music and worship were top quality, there was a wonderful use of media in the staging and videos, there was lots of humor, the messages were relevant to the students, and it is at a beautiful location right on the ocean. You can tell that a lot of thought and prayer went into this event.

These last two days have really challenged me and renewed a hunger in my heart to strive for excellence in our area of ministry. I don’t want to be comfortable, but to continually look for innovative ways to reach young people. Whatever area of ministry that you feel that the Lord is directing you to participate in…I would challenge you to minister in that area with excellence.

When life is so uncertain, God Isn’t!!

I wanted to take a moment to share what is on my heart. I listened to a message online that mentioned how we can find ourselves in the midst of uncertain times, and if we are not careful we can allow anxiety and fear to overwhelm us. It is at times like this that we need to remind ourselves that God has a plan…and his plan is to replace our anxieties with his peace. We can do this by going to God in prayer with your deepest needs, hopes, and fears and know that our Heavenly Father is both aware and at work in every area of our lives.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

In order to reach people the church must be relevant!

I love being a part of a large growing church! There are so many exciting opportunities of reaching new people in our community. Selina, Desirae and I were sitting around our dining room table talking about our new ultra contemporary 333 service. Selina said that a co-worker mentioned what a great opportunity this service was going to be to invite unchurched friends that have been hurt or do not think that they are ready for a traditional church service. Our church is making a great effort to reach people where they are at.

In order to reach people the church must be relevant. It must communicate God’s truth and hope in the language of the culture in which it is situated. Unfortunately, many consider cultural relevance a compromise for the church. Though they may be sincerely motivated I believe they are incorrect. As Jesus taught he often made statements that his audience could clearly identify with. His teaching was relevant to the crowds he ministered to and I believe that is what our goal is for our 333 service.

God can make our dreams come true…

With the coming of “2009” many people are sharing New Year’s Resolutions. This time of year makes me think “philosophically”…to imagine what God might want to do. Who knows what God might choose to do this year? I’m reminded of the account in I Samuel when Jonathan wakes up his armor barrer and asks him “who knows what God may want to do tonight”? They left the camp of Israel and attacked the Philistine Army. They began to defeat their enemy, the Philistines. It resulted in an incredible victory for the people of God. So I ask this question of you…Who knows what God may want to do in each of our lives this year?

Right now I’m driving home from Asheville, NC. It’s dark, rainy & foggy as we drive through the mountains. Selina, Desirae & I enjoyed a wonderful couple of days with some of our dearest friends from Michigan. We spent a day at the incredible Biltmore Estates and a day at the NC Arboretum. As we were hiking, my friend Dennis and I were talking about God given dreams…Ideas and passions that God has placed in our hearts. Some of which you may spend a lifetime waiting to see fulfilled. We discussed how in each of our lives we have been blessed to see some of our dreams come to pass. God gives us desires of things that we want to see accomplished and then we are able to see them come to completion. Our Lord is truly faithful!!

If God has placed a dream in your heart…whatever it might be…don’t give up on it! Continue to hold tight to the hand of God and remember the scripture that declares

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Finishing Strong…

A short time ago Selina, Desirae and I were privileged to go on a trip to Orlando, FL. We had the opportunity to stay at a lovely resort. We enjoyed walking around the beautiful grounds, swimming in the pools at the resort, a fun day at Epcot, and shopping at downtown Disney.

While we were there I met a gentleman named Jim. As we talked I was able to share some encouraging words with him. When I told him that I was a Children’s Pastor he began to talk about his “church” experience. He informed me that he used to attend a Christian church regularly and really enjoyed being involved. Unfortunately, he was disappointed to find out that a leader of his church was caught stealing from the offerings. He shared how that incident devasted his faith. Since then he chooses to stay home and watch Christian programming instead of attending a church.

I shared with him that many years ago the Pastor that I was serving with gave every member on staff a copy of a book entitled, Finishing Strong (one of the finest books I’ve ever read on being involved in ministry). Jim mentioned that at one point he felt called into ministry, but after the disappointment he experienced that he was afraid of “failing & disappointing others”.

In the book, I shared with him, the author mentions that the percentage of people who start in ministry and finish strong is only around 10%. I also shared that the author mentions that the Titanic didn’t sink because it was a poorly built ship, but because they disregarded all the warning signals. We don’t need to be afraid or discouraged. Instead we need to be challenged & determined in our heart that with God’s strength & help that we can finish strong. Remember “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Harvestfest ’08 at The Torch was a blast!

If you weren’t there you missed a great time!

Our theme was “Jesus is a Classic: He’s never out of style”!

There were over 1,200 in attendance. We had 6 inflatables for the children to bounce in, run through, tumble in, race each other, etc. Our “trunk or treat area” consisted of 18 carnival style games and lots of candy! Little and big children alike were able to enjoy pony rides and a petting zoo area. Of course there was delicious food…finger lickin’ good chicken, hot dogs and the tasty ‘smores! We had a toasty bonfire to sit around and chat while waiting for the cool hayride pulled by an antique John Deere Tractor. Classic cars decorated our entrance area and “the Fonz” entertained those on the wagon ride with music from the 50’s!!

A new addition to our Harvestfest this year was Wildlife Wonders. The audience was amazed as they were shown lizards of all sizes! Several of our children were able to hold a SNAKE that was over 8 feet long! There were lemurs, a hawk, a buffalo among other animals! They also shared a Christian message with those in attendance.

We want to thank everyone who helped to make this event such a success!

Remember that God cares about you. Sometimes we may feel that things are “out of control” in our lives! But even during those trying times…God takes care of us! Somebody cared enough to put shoes on this pooch…how much more does our heavenly father care for us!! :0)

God’s handiwork is evident!!!

Selina and I did some hiking at Tallulah Gorge this weekend. We ran into a College and Career group from Valdosta. It was neat to listen to them talk about the Gorge. One girl mentioned that the 2.5-mile hike they had taken that morning felt more like 10 looong miles! :0) Another gentlemen looked out over the gorge taking in the trees just beginning to show some fall color, all the massive rocks and the running water. He said, “Can you believe that some people think that this happened by accident? It Is just one more proof to me that there is a God!”

I can’t agree more! Whether you’re looking at mountains, the ocean, meadows, or a canyon…God’s handiwork is evident. And as we look at each other we are reminded of our creator who made us all unique and special!!
